Film - NIE NIE NIE NIE SCHUETTELT EIN KIND
This piece was satirical experience of how we as a society perceive young people and the expectations we have for them, even if it is more so a projection of our own wants and needs. It was underpinned by 911 attacks, where I really worried for future generations world they would be living in. This work stems from a bumper sticker I was shocked to find promoting not to shake a baby.

Film - KITSCH show Thunder Bay to Wausau
Film docu of the Kitsch series examining each piece, the projection, cameras within the work. The first showing of this work opened at the Thunder Bay Art Museum/Ontario in 2008 and again at the CVA in Wausau/WI in 2015.

Film - KITSCH Film for kitsch installation(center projection)
This is the film I created for the center channel projection within the space of the Kitsch show. Shots were created using actual surfaces of modeled paint, and the 3D surface of the piece "How the West Was Really Won", along with animated toy jet fighters and small swordsman fighting physical paint. Showcasing a realm between physical, sculpture, and film it skirts the peripheral of all three.

Film - Staedel Show DVC Pro 50 NTSC 2003
This was footage from an installation created at the Staedelschule, Frankfurt Am Main 2003. It included the roaming sculpture, sound, and film I created. Film sequence duration 8min11sec looped.

Film - DronesAutomata. 2002
This was a piece I created and was shown at MIAD in Milwaukee WI at some part of 2002. All forms were hand built, with the exception of the drive mechanisms that I assembled from kits. Piece measured 8ft across and 12-14inches high. Later, I installed this piece in a different way at the Staedelschule with video projection and sound. The last showing was for my MFA thesis UW Madison with Karl Sternberg. There is had the sam video previously, but also wrapped around one of Karl's pieces hanging above the piece.

The sculpture you are viewing is titled Further Contemplation of Mining: Who buys the party favors? Is part of that series. Being from the Badger state (not because we all love badgers), but because we have a long history with mining. What seemed like almost everything valuable was extracted generations ago became an eagerness for the ordinary. My hope in this piece is that it sparks the minds of viewers to think not just of the immediate, but also those that didn’t make it to the party. mixed media 4’x10’x8” John Swartwout 2019©

Nort - Tribute to American Hardcore: Corporate Deathburger
Tribute to American Hardcore: Corporate Deathburger Mixed Media 7 x 10 x 5in John Swartwout 2018-9© Youth on stage jumping off into an expecting crowd. Wailing songs about monumental greed, but not being heard or even noticed. "Corporate Deathburger" for me is a tribute to that particular time and place. The power and energy of those songs wrung a tapestry of innocent truth. Perhaps, they wring even more true in our modern times and the consequences for not noticing could be ongoing. Placing an emphasis on an innocent demeanor or toy-like presence I make an attempt to sift through the splinters of simple truisms in my work. Growing up in rural Wisconsin I was surrounded by dry……cough……. humor, I believe that has had some effect on my work as well. It has always been my sincerest goal to convey these truths and dichotomies with my work and hopefully viewers enjoy this brand of art and humor, but also contemplate their surroundings as well.

Nort - Punk du Nort
Punk A#@ Moose mixed media w/electronics 32 x 48 x 22in John Swartwout 2007-8© Growing up in the upper-midwest and living in an extremely rural area, I can’t think of a better place to find punk music can you? From the majority of stations playing country or stations spinning Led Zeppelin 5.7 million times, we had a local college radio station that introduced me and my friends to a whole new world of music. Although the scene wasn’t LA’s scene, we went to most of the major bands at the college and a run down theatre downtown. Within the region we had formidable bands such as: The Replacements, Husker Du, Tar Babies, Mecht Mensch, Die Dreuzen, and The Violent Femmes to name a few. The pieces “Punk du Nort”, “Tribute to North American Hardcore: Corporate Deathburger”, and “The Sound Cuts Right Through the Pines” capture that moment of a younger me and represent that independent scene in the midwest.

Although not in the creation of this work, the piece is fairly straightforward in it’s content. I believe everyone has his or her own private Idaho, a small portion of nirvana within their lives. For me, it is the “now” moment of moving across a lake in the Northwoods during the sun setting past the pines. Whether in a canoe, kayak, or fishing boat, the setting sun peering past the pines in an almost strobe like fashion is truly inner bliss for me. It’s bliss, it’s a happy place and will always be in my heart. Apex Dream Mixed Media w/video 76 x 28 x 10in John Swartwout 2019©

Inclusopolis: What if you could be a part of a city where everybody’s voice was heard? Everyone, regardless of age or ability? What if that city floats on water! This was the city that grew on the Crary Gallery’s fountain area for a time. People who participated were from all ages and abilities. Everyone had a chance to build a structure(building or otherwise) and attach it, balance it, and float it with the rest of the growing city. For many, this was their first introduction to hand held power tools, but once coached for a bit it, they were creating amazing things! I felt I had a crew there creating and spreading the word that everyone, I mean, everyone should have a place at the table.

Install Shots - Further Contemplation of Mining: Wausau Center for the Arts
The CVA staff took liberties with the install of this piece and used a space in the front of the gallery. It really worked out nice and looked fantastic! Spread out in the space it took on a different and interesting feel.

Install Shots - Further Contemplation of Mining: ARC Gallery Chicago
Given liberties with the install, the staff at the ARC gallery took it in a bit of a different direction. Some of the materials were pilled up by color and took on the look and feel of a processing center! Plus, by placing it right to the street window it had the presence of being at street level and coexisting with indoor and outdoor space. In all, a magnificent job by the ARC Gallery even more humor was add to an already humors piece, Kudos!!

This is a collaborative piece with my son Samuel. It is a tribute to Dr. Seuss, who is one of his favorite authors….mine too. It was a startup dialogue towards brainstorming. From there it was a wild ride in the journey through the process. Free flowing as art should be! It was a true joy working with him in the studio!
